Louisville, Ky. - Senior forward Justin Pierre was named the Hilton Garden Inn- Airport Classic MVP after guiding the Cardinals to the Classic championship. Pierre scored the game winning goal in the Cards' 2-0 win over UMKC Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park.
"Today was a very convincing win," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "It was a total team effort. We talked in the preseason about a total squad concept and today we saw the benefits of that concept. We were deeper and more confident in our rotating of players today.
"Everyone contributed, we had good goal keeping, a solid defensive effort, and creative midfield play. Unfortunately were weren't able to finish every chance but we will go back and work on it. Overall it was a good start to the season and a good confidence builder for the UK game on Tuesday."
The Cardinals finished the first half of the game scoreless but managed to outshot the Kangaroos 12-7. Cardinal keeper Matt Smith finished the half with two saves.
Pierre wasted no time scoring in the second half. He headed a deflection in to the left side of the net in the 48th minute to put the Cards ahead. In the 68th minute junior Ryan Edwards took a cross from Jonathan Williams and dribbled the ball in past a defender to give the Cards a cushion.
Louisville finished the game with a 19-9 shot advantage over UMKC. Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Edwards finished the second half with three saves while UMKC's keeper finished with six saves.
Joining Pierre on the all-tournament team was junior Matt Neely, Jelani Grant and Charlie Edwards. Pierre finished the tournament with three goals.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 7 against rival Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
