Louisville, Ky. - In a late night match on Friday even, the University of Louisville (3-2-1) men's soccer team defeated the Winthrop Eagles (2-2-0) 2-1 in double overtime. Freshman David Guzman scored the game winner in the 106th minute of play. Guzman weaved through several Eagle defenders to score the game winner.
"Winthrop made it difficult for us tonight," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "They played very well. We played inconsistently and found it hard to possess that ball at the right times. Our defense took too many risks tonight. That is what these early games are designed for to experiment. We are still a few games away from being a good team. I think the time switch and the change of venue really influenced how the game was played."
The Cardinals held an 11-1 shot advantage over the Eagles in the first half but finished the period scoreless. Senior Ian Quattroucchi scored off a cross from Matt Neely in the 58th minute to put the Cards ahead. Winthrop's Dee Vydra scored off a cross from Andy Ross to tie the match in the 74th minute of play.
Winthrop's goalkeeper Steve Winton finished the regulation with three saves. The Eagles outshot the Cards 2-1 in the first overtime period. Guzman ended the game with his six shot of the evening.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Noon against Georgia Southern at the UK Invitational.
