
Cardinal Nine Drops Game One to Houston

LOUISVILLE, KY - Houston jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 12-2 victory over the University of Louisville on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader.
Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Rob Johnson and Kevin Roberts.
The Cougars(24-25, 15-9) added two more in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Thanos Papavasiliou and a wild pitch with the bases full for a 4-0 edge.
The Cougars added four more runs in the third, upping the lead to 8-0 over the Cardinals, and a solo home run by Cole Bruce in the fifth plated the ninth Cougar run.
Louisville(22-26, 9-15) got on the board in the sixth when a sacrifice fly by Daniel Burton scored Ron Braun and an RBI single by Ryan McKinnon scored Logan Johnson, who had doubled.
Houston scored a single run in the seventh on an RBI single by Roberts, his fifth hit of the game, and an RBI single by Tully in the eighth made it 11-2 UH.
A final RBI single by Brett Logan in the ninth closed the scoring.
Matt Varner (7-3) picked up the win for the Cougars, giving up one earned run in 5.1 innings of work on four hits and three walks. He struck out three. Travis Mays tossed the final three innings, fanning five to earn his first save of the season.
Brian Halford (6-5) started and took the loss, surrendering eight runs on eight hits and six walks in 2.2 innings, striking out two.
Scott Jenkins went a career-high 5.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs on eight hits and a pair of walks. He fanned four.
Steve Ayers tossed the ninth, allowing a run on three hits.
