LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Third-seeded Houston cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 14 Saint Louis in the first round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cougars will next face the winner of the Marquette/Southern Miss match on Friday at Seneca Park (Noon, EST), while the Billikens fall to the consolation bracket where they will take on 11th-seeded UAB on Friday at 9 a.m.
Houston picked up the doubles point with Diana Martin and Karine Urbin cliching an 8-2 decision over SLU's Katerina Lozanova and Melissa Cutler at No. 2. Yolandi Yerblanche and Kami Miller followed, defeating Rebecca Steer and Lindsay Winninger, 8-1.
In singles action, the Cougars nabbed three singles matches in straight sets. Terblanche finished with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over SLU's Cutler, while Miller swept Winninger, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 5 position. Houston's Urbin downed Rebecca Steer, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the victory.
MARQUETTE 4, SOUTHERN MISS 1 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sixth-seeded Marquette defeated Southern Miss, 4-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship at Seneca Park on Thursday. Marquette will now face No. 3 Houston on Friday at noon while No. 12 USM will take on Cincinnati in the consolation round on Friday at 9 a.m. Both matches will be played at Seneca Park.
The Marquette tandem of Veronica Garcia Briseno and Callan Smith narrowly defeated Nicola Slater and Katharina Sadofsky, while Francina Bonnelly and Eva Trujillo Herrera won at No. 3 against USM's Olivia Berry and Courtney Ulrich, 8-4.
After losing the doubles point, Southern Miss fought back claiming the No. 1 singles spot. Slater notched a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Marquette's Briseno. However, MU claimed the No. 2, 4 and 5 singles positions with Bonnelly sealing the victory with a 7-5, 7-6 decision over Berry at No. 5.
