Tampa, Fla. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team fell to South Florida 3-1 Saturday evening at the USF Soccer Stadium. The Cardinals had to play the final 14 minutes of the game one man down after junior Tim Velten was issued a red card. Louisville finished the season with a 5-10-4 overall record.
"Once again we fell victim to an early goal," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "But after the goal I thought that we settled down a bit and played very well. We finished the first half with a lot of possession and were fortunate to be down only a goal. USF's Hunter West and Rodrigo Hidalgo are two of the most dangerous players we have faced this season. It was very easy to see why South Florida had been ranked most of this season. I am very pleased with the way this team finished out the season. Even though we have been eliminated from the Conference USA Tournament, they played very hard and didn't give up."
In the third minute of play the Bulls' Brandon Streicher scored on a penalty kick to give South Florida a 1-0 lead early in the game. South Florida finished the first half with a slight 7-5 shot advantage.
Five minutes into the second half the Cardinals capitalized off a corner kick. Senior Andy Damier headed in the corner from Ian Quattroucchi to tie the score up. In the 61st minute, USF's Hunter scored when Charlie Edwards came off his line to put the Bulls up 2-1.
In the 75th minute Louisville's steady defender Velten was issued a red card, forcing the Cardinals to play with 10 men on the field. With just 45 seconds remaining in the match, USF's Kevin King scored off a Hidalgo assist for final goal of the evening.
