Louisville, Ky. - The 18th ranked UAB Blazers scored on a penalty kick with a minute and a half remaining to defeat the Cardinals 2-1 in Cardinal Park on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals fall to 5-9-4 on the season and 2-5-1 in league play.
"It was a very controversial way to end the season," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "The call cost us a place in the Conference USA Tournament. Overall tonight was a good team performance. I thought that a lot of the stretches in the game we just outplayed them. I am proud of this team, the way they played tonight. Our seniors really represented well and just played their hearts out. I hope they can respond with a lot of class and intensity against South Florida on Saturday evening."
UAB's Jason McLaughlin scored off a cross from Rogerio Oliveira in the 26th minute of play to put the Blazers up 1-0 at the end of the half. The Cardinals offense clicked at the end of the half, producing five shots on goal but could not finish.
Justin Pierre, playing his final game at Cardinal Park, tied the game up in the 77th minute of play taking a pass from Tim Velten in front of the goal. Cardinal keeper Tyler Wilcox made two big saves in the second half to keep Louisville in the game.
With 90 seconds remaining in the game, an intentional handball was called on the Cardinals giving UAB a penalty kick. The Blazers' Sandy Gbandi connected on the kick to give UAB the win.
The Cardinals finished the game with a 12-11 shot advantage over the Blazers. Wilcox finished the game with two saves while UAB's A.J. Robles finished with six saves.
Louisville will finish out the season at South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
