Louisville, Ky. - The Saint Louis Billikens scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the match to shutout the Louisville Cardinals 3-0 Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. The loss was the second worst loss for the Cardinals in Cardinal Park since then ranked No. 1 Indiana defeated the Cards 4-0 on Sept. 20, 2001.
"I was extremely disappointed with the first 20 minutes of tonight's game," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "I accept the loss as my own. As a coach, I didn't have the team ready to go into battle. The system we played in the first half was the wrong way to go. After the half we made some adjustments and were able to deal with Saint Louis's attack. Not to take anything away from Saint Louis, they are a great team and have a wonderful attack. I just don't think we were ready to play at the start of the game. I knew there was something missing and as a coach I did not have them ready."
Saint Louis's Ryan Wileman took an assist from Tim Ward and got behind Cardinal keeper Tyler Wilcox and tapped it in for the first goal at the four minute mark. Then in the 12th minute of play SLU's John Di Raimondo broke free from the Cardinal defense and dribbled the ball right down the middle of the field and nailed a shot from the top of the box to go up 2-0 on the Cards.
Wileman connected again in the 16th minute off a deflection from Alex Matteson to put the Billikens up 3-0. The Cardinals finished the first half with six shots and only one on goal.
The Cardinals switched goalkeepers to start the second half, inserting freshman Charles Edwards. The Billikens had a chance to score again late in the second half but Edwards made the save right in front of the goal. Saint Louis goalkeeper Martin Hutton made a reaching save off Justin Pierre's shot in the second half to register the shutout.
Louisville finished the game with 11 shots and Saint Louis finished with 10. Edwards had two saves in the second half while Hutton finished with two for the game.
Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday evening as they host Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
