University of Louisville volleyball coach Leonid Yelin has signed a new contract, ensuring his presence with the Cardinals until June of 2008.
The contract is for four years with "tremendous potential for roll-out" according to Julie Hermann, senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator.
"Coach Yelin has been and continues to be the future of our program. We crafted this contract to make a statement as to how important we believe him to be to one of our most visible women's programs. He is integral to our success in volleyball, " said Hermann.
Yelin has 308 career wins with 195 of them coming at U of L. Only 55 coaches in the country have reached this mark. Yelin entered the season ranked No. 10 of active Division I coaches ranked by winning percentage. The Cardinals went 25-6 this season and advanced to their fourteenth NCAA appearance after winning a share of the Conference USA regular season title and the C-USA Tournament. They ended the season ranked No. 17 by the USA Today/AVCA Poll and No. 15 in the RPI.
"I am extremely pleased and thankful for the opportunity that the administration has given me, "said Yelin. "I am very happy to be at a place where the support from the fans and administration make it a joy to coach and where my family has its heart."
Coach Yelin averages 24 wins per season. He could go three years with no wins at all and still average above 20 wins. His lone losing season came in his first year at Barry when he went 8-17.
