Men's Tennis Completes Play at adidas Invitational

The University of Louisville men's tennis team traveled to Peachtree City, Georgia to compete in the adidas Invitational Sept. 26-28. The tournament field also included payers from Arizona State, Duke, Florida, Northwestern, Notre Dame, TCU and Wisconsin.
The Cards suffered three losses in the opening round of doubles as Wisconsin's David Hippee and Alex Kasarov defeated Jonathan Howard and Mark Kennedy 8-1; TCU's Rafael Abrue and Fabrizio Sestini teamed to beat Jeremy Clark and Matt Mayer 8-4 and second-seeded Luis Haddock and Matt Scott of Notre Dame defeated Octavian Nicodim and Damar Johnson 8-6.
The U of L doubles teams moved to the consolation draw where Johnson and Nicodim topped Wisconsin's Mike Goodman and Lachezar Kasarov 8-2. Clark and Mayer beat Wisconsin's Alex Conti and Scott Greet before defeating teammates Johnson and Nicodim 8-3. The tandem of Howard and Kennedy defeated Northwestern's Chuck Perrin and Adam Schaechterle 8-4 and Wisconsin's Pete Amundson and Mark Wienig 8-4 to set up an all-Louisville final in the consolation draw. The match will be played at a later date.
In singles, Louisville's Johnson advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Scott Green of Wisconsin 6-4, 7-5 and Tennessee's Rawl Martin 6-2, 6-4 to reach the round of 16 where he fell to Duke's Walter Ludovic 4-6, 4-6.
Louisville's Matt Mayer defeated Tennessee's Jimmy Thornton 6-1, 6-1. Mayer fell to Ludovic 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. The loss dropped Mayer to the consolation draw, where he defeated Wisconsin's Alex Conti 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 and Scott Green of Wisconsin 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 before falling to Northwestern's Chuck Perrin 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Nicodim defeated Duke's Peter Rodrigues 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of play and fell to TCU's Jacopo Tezza 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 in the second round.
U of L's Jeremy Clark was outlasted by Nick Hegarty of Arizona State 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and fell to Wisconsin's Lachezar Kasarov 6-1, 7-5.
TCU's Daniel Scholte edged Jhonny Berrido 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Berrido defeated teammate Jonathan Howard 6-2, 6-2 in consolation draw before falling to Northwestern's Perrin 6-4, 6-4. Howard lost his first round match to Northwestern's Tommy Hanus 6-1, 6-4.
"Freshman Damar Johnson did a good job of starting his career at U of L with a quarterfinal finish at prestigious adidas Invitational," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Our wins against players from the SEC and the Big 10 prove that we can compete against some of the tougher conferences in the nation."
The Cardinals will host the sixth-annual Louisville Fall Invitational Oct. 3-5 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
