
Softball Closes Home Season with 2-1 win over Houston

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Playing in the last home game of her college career, senior Keola Calderon blasted a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, to give the University of Louisville softball team a 2-1 win over Conference USA opponent Houston Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Shannon Nord reached on a two-base error, moved to third when Nicole Sparks grounded out and crossed the plate on Calderon's sacrifice fly.
The Cougars quickly tied the contest in the top of the second when Jenilee Skender drew a walk. Jeanie Davis, pinch running for Skender, advanced to second on Kim Nesloney's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Michelle Keith to make it a 1-1 game.
The teams battled with the score tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh. Louisville's Alma Navarrete led off with a walk and Kacey Yourous replaced her as a pinch runner. Jenny Johnson entered the game to pitch for Houston and struck out the next two batters. With two away in the inning, Nord beat out an infield single and Yourous moved to second. A hit by Sparks loaded the bases for Calderon. After working to a full-count, Calderon ripped a single to left field, scoring Yourous to give the Cardinals the 2-1 win.
U of L starter Krystle Herold (5-9) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out three in seven innings. Offensively, the Cardinals had seven hits in the game. Sparks was 2-for-4 with a double. Calderon went 1-for-2 and drove in both of Louisville's runs.
Houston starter Crystal Briscoe (9-5) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and striking out five in six innings. Houston drops to 34-20 (14-7 C-USA).
The Cardinals (21-21, 12-8) will travel to Chicago where they will close out the regular season against seventh-ranked DePaul (38-5, 19-2).
