
Softball Splits Houston Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to Houston 2-0 but won the second game 1-0 Saturday in a Conference USA doubleheader at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game, Houston took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jaci Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a hit by Kristen Glowacz and scored on a single by Arelis Ferreris to make it a 1-0 game.
The Cougars added another run in the fifth when Kim Nesloney singled, moved to second on a hit by Glowacz and scored on Ferreris' hit to give Houston the 2-0 lead.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (11-10) took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four in four innings. Shannon Nord and Aja Sherman accounted for the Cardinals' two hits.
Houston starter Jamie Falco (13-8) picked up the complete game shutout, scattering two hits and striking out six batters. Offensively, the Cougars had eight hits in the contest. Glowacz went 3-for-4 and Ferreris was 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, U of L scored the only run of the game in the first inning when Nord led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Nicole Sparks and crossed the plate on a single by Keola Calderon to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Louisville held the lead for the rest of the game, but Houston threatened in the seventh when Michelle Whipple reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third when a Cardinal error allowed Kim Nesloney to reach and move to second. The Cardinals' Nicole Sparks threw Whipple out at home for the second out of the inning when Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice. Amber King drew a walk to load the bases, but Rak and the U of L defense held as Glowacz hit into a fielder's choice and U of L's Lacy Wood made an unassisted play at third to end the game.
Rak (12-10) picked up the complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out four in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had six hits in the game. Calderon went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Houston starter Jenny Johnson (11-7) took the loss, allowing one earned run on six hits in six innings.
The Cardinals (20-21, 11-8 C-USA) will play their final home game of the season when they square off with Houston (34-19, 14-6) Sunday at noon at Ulmer Stadium.
