Kentucky Sweeps Softball Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to visiting Kentucky 2-0 and 3-0 Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Nikki Jones drew a walk to lead off the inning, moved to second on Lori Melchi's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Rachel Friberg to make it a 1-0 game.
Kentucky added an insurance run in the sixth as Lyndsey Angus and Friberg delivered back-to-back singles. Amy Kendall's bunt single loaded the bases. Angus crossed the plate on Jessica Nance's groundout to make the score 2-0.
Louisville threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh as Aja Sherman and Lisa Estes singled, giving the Cardinals runners on first and second, but they could not capitalize.
Kentucky starter Amy Kendall (8-22) picked up the complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out five. Offensively, Friberg was 2-for-3 in the contest.
Jessica Rak (11-9) took the loss for the Cardinals, allwing two earned runs on four hits and striking out six.
In game two, Kentucky jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jones led off the game with a single and moved to second when an error allowed Melchi to reach safely on a sacrifice bunt. A hit by Angus loaded the bases for Friberg's two-run single, which sent Jones and Melchi home.
The Wildcats scored again in the third when Nance singled, moved to second on Megan Glenn's groundout, stole third and crossed the plate on a Cardinal error to make it a 3-0 game.
"For the past week, we've been struggling offensively," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We are hoping to break out of our slump before a crucial conference match up with Houston."
UK starter Crystalie Wolfe (1-8) picked up the complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out two. Offensively, the Wildcats had six hits in the contest, Jones finished 2-for-4. Kentucky improves to 12-38.
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (4-9) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned on six hits and striking out one in seven innings.
The Cardinals (19-20, 10-7 Conference USA) will close out the home season when the play host to C-USA opponent Houston (33-18, 13-5) Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
