LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville Cardinal baseball team plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Butler 8-6 Thursday and remain undefeated on the season.

Dave Williams Jr.'s two run single in the second gave the Cards(4-0) a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs(0-1) responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third. Second baseman Jeff Brown, who had doubled, scored on a wild pitch and catcher Tim Marks plated two more with a two run single for a 3-2 Butler advantage.

Butler first baseman Paul Beck blasted a solo home run with one out in the fifth, Marks followed with one of his own and an out later Ryan Nance went yard for the third home run of the inning, chasing Cardinal starter Zach Jackson.

Down 6-3, Louisville took advantage of two Butler errors to cut the lead to 6-5. First baseman Morgan Bojorquez tripled home J.T. LaFountain, and scored on a ground out by catcher Ron Braun.

Curt Stewart then reached on an error and scored on a double down the line by Greg Taylor.

Josh Bolen walked to lead off the Cardinal seventh, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Marks.

Bolen then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ron Braun to tie the game at six.

Second baseman Nick Haley drew his second walk of the game to lead off the eighth and eventually scored on a balk. Bolen singled home an insurance run for the final margin.

Jackson lasted 4.2 frames, giving up six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four. Freshman Brian Halford took over, making his college debut and tossing three strong innings, allowing a hit and a walk to go with a strikeout.

Carlos Fernandez (2-0) faced and retired the final four batters of the game, striking out three to pick up the win.

Reliever Craig Costello (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up five runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks. He struck out three.

The Cards are off to its best start since 1989 when they opened 5-0.

Louisville and Butler will meet again on Friday at noon for a previously unscheduled game before the Cards host UNC-Asheville at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free and both games will be broadcast on WAVG 1450 AM and www.UofLsports.com.
