LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Sonja Percan showcased her shotmaking ability and had a match-high 16 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-16, 30-19, 34-32 sweep of DePaul to open Conference USA volleyball play.
The No. 18 ranked Cardinals boosted their record to 8-3 and 1-0 in C-USA play. The Blue Demons sink to 7-9 and 0-1 in the league.
"DePaul has played six more matches than us and had more time to iron out any wrinkles," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "I am still giving some different lineups a look but DePaul wasn't able to exploit that."
Percan exploited her reputation as an aggressive hard-hitting outside hitter by tipping several balls for kills as DePaul pulled back to try and handle her powerful hitting that earned her a berth on the Croatian national team last summer.
"I don't think they expected me to mix up my shots so much and I was able to hit it to spots where they weren't," said Percan.
U of L hit .357 to DePaul's 131 and outblocked the Blue Demons six to two. The Cardinals were able to take advantage of aggressive serving with eight aces, with Percan notching two of them.
Middle blocker Adriana Morris came off the bench to start the second game and hit six kills on seven attacks fro a .857 hitting percentage,, which is second best in a match in school history.
The Blue Demons were led by Janet Cotter's nine kills.
The Cardinals continue C-USA play Saturday at 7:30 against Marquette.
