Petersen and Chicoine Named All-Tournament; Schrand voted MVP
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The No. 4-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team completed the sweep of the Cardinal Classic with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-19) win over St. John's University on Monday afternoon in L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.Â
UofL notched a .362 clip on 44 kills, 43 digs, 12 blocks, and five service aces. Outside hitter Payton Petersen matched her career-high in kills with 12 during the match, hitting .611 on the day with two digs and one block. Middle blocker Reese Robins knocked down 10 kills and posted six blocks in her first start of the season. Middle blocker Hannah Sherman stuffed seven blocks and added three kills while setter Molly Willson killed two balls and posted 32 assists. Libero Kamden Schrand served three of the Cards' aces, with outside hitter Chloe Chicoine and defensive specialist Molly Urban served the other two. Schrand had a career-high 18 digs in the match and Chicoine tallied 12 of her own.
The Louisville defense held St. John's to a .062 hitting percentage on 25 kills, 33 digs, and one ace. Outside hitter Erin Jones led the way offensively, hitting .333 with 12 kills, five digs, one ace and one block.Â
Petersen and Chicoine were named to the All-Tournament team, and Schrand took home Most Valuable Player honors.Â
Set 1: St. John's 13, Louisville 25
St. John's took the first two points of the match before a block connection between Sherman and Robins put Louisville on the board. The Cards continued on a 3-0 run with another block from Sherman and Robins and a kill from Petersen. A kill by the Red Storm ended the run and a block tied the score at four-all. UofL pulled ahead 7-4, highlighted by an ace from Schrand. The teams traded points until Louisville got out to a 10-6 lead following kills from Petersen and Chicoine and forced SJU to take its first timeout. St. John's grabbed a point out of the break, but the Cards continued to dominate as they extended their lead 20-9. Chicoine, Sherman and Petersen all recorded kills in the span, with Chicoine adding an ace of her own. Robins stuffed a solo block to finish out UofL's 6-0 scoring run and lead 21-9. The Red Storm added a kill to stop the run, but Robins connected for her second kill. A solo stuff from Petersen put Louisville at set point 24-12 but a service error by the Cards held it off for a point. Petersen's seventh kill sealed the set win 25-13 for UofL.
Set 2: St. John's 15, Louisville 25
Chicoine and Sherman teamed up for a block to start off the second set, but St. John's responded with a kill. Scoring remained tight with Robins, Petersen, Chicoine and Addison Makun all recording kills as the Cards pulled out to a 14-9 lead. Leading 15-10 at the media timeout, UofL continued to extend its lead on kills from Makun, Robins and Wilson, with Robins and Sherman connecting for their third block of the day. The Red Storm burned its first timeout of the set down 19-13 to try and stop the Louisville scoring, but Petersen grabbed her tenth kill out of the break. The Cards kept on scoring as Petersen added a kill and Schrand added her second ace to take a commanding 23-14 lead. SJU used its second timeout and knocked down a kill coming out of the huddle, but Petersen put UofL at set point with a kill. Makun and Wilson's block connection won the set 25-15.
Set 3: St. John's 19, Louisville 25
Louisville started the third set on a 5-1 run of a kill from Robins and blocks between Robins, Sherman and Chicoine. St. John's answered with a 4-0 scoring run to knot the score at five. Robins ended the Red Storm's scoring with a kill before the Cards scored seven more unanswered points. Robins added two more kills, Makun stuffed a solo block and Schrand served her third ace as UofL pulled out to a 13-5 lead. A pair of errors ended Louisville's run, but Makun added another kill and Urban served an ace as the Cards stayed ahead 15-7. Points were traded with Wilson and Alanna Bankston adding kills for UofL and Sherman adding another solo block. Up 20-15, Ava Utterback tallied three consecutive kills for the Cards. SJU responded with a 3-0 run of its own to cut Louisville's lead down to five at 23-18. Makun and Robins connected for a block to give the Cards set point at 24-18, and Makun clinched the match with a kill, 25-19.Â
