LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sophomore outside hitter Lena Ustymenko had 22 kills, three aces and 19 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Marquette in Conference USA Volleyball Saturday night at Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals improve to 9-3 and 2-0 in league play with the 30-22, 29=31, 32-30, 30-25 win. Marquette drops to 3-12 and 0-2 in the C-USA standings.
This Marquette team is much better than their record shows. They battle and don't want to let any ball fall to the floor," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "We had three offensive weapons tonight that made it very hard to defend."
The Cardinals had three hitters in double digit kills with Bing Sun and Sonja Percan adding 18 and 19 respectively. U of L outblocked Marquette 8-4. The Cardinals hit .316 which helped their cause despite recording 13 service errors.
"When it is a game of long rallies and transitional play, sometimes serving suffers when the players don't take a deep breath and gather themselves when they go to the service line. That may have been the case tonight. But we also had six aces, so the adrenalin can work in your favor."
Marquette hit only .143 in the second game but found a way to win after taking the game to deuce. U of L had to battle the Eagles in the third game andlet Marquette to game point first before winning 32-30.
The Cardinals got a solid performance from middle blocker Benny Flynn who had seven kills on 18 swings and had six blocks.
U of L travels to Cincinnati on Friday to continue the conference slate.
