Volleyball Falls to Cincinnati

CINCINNATI -- Julie DuPont had 23 kills and two aces to lead Cincinnati to a three game sweep of the University of Louisville in Conference USA volleyball action at Shoemaker Arena on Friday night.
The 30-22, 30-26, 31-29 upset of the No. 17 ranked Cardinals drops them to 9-4 and 2-1 in the league. Cincinnati improves to 17-2 and 3-0 in league.
"We struggled in serve receive tonight and that was the difference," said Leonid Yelin, head coach.
In the first game,Cincinnati used an eight point run to break the 14-14 tie and go up 22-14. The Cardinals 7-2 run to pull within three at 2 4-212with four straight points of their own to pull to 23-21. The Bearcats built their lead to 26-21 and forced Leonid Yelin into a timeout. But the Cardinals scored only once more with the Bearcats taking the game 30-22. UC hit .409 led by Julie DuPont's seven kills. U of l was led by Lena Ustymenko's sic kills.
U of L dug itself a hole by allowing UC to a 9-2 lead early in the second game. Freshman Ana Yartseva rallied her team with four the kills in the 6-1 run the Cardinals used to pull to withing four at 18-15. After a UC timeout, the Bearcats continued to build their led with a 5-2 run to go up 23-17 on a kill by Rachel Torblaa. U of L's Bing Sun had three kills and a block to help U of L get back to within three at 25-22 and forced Reed Sunahara to use his final timeout. The Cardinals could not exploit the run and fell 30-26.
In the final set, the Cardinals battled to stay alive as neither team could establish a significant lead. Tied at 27, The Cardinals could not contain DuPont who had four of the last six points to seal the upset.
UC hit .350 for the match, with outside hitters DuPont and Maria Pongonis hitting .327 and .412 respectively.
U of L was led by Ustymenko's 15 kills. Sonja Percan ended the match with 12 kills and 12 digs and four blocks.
U of L is idle until Oct. 17 when they travel to East Carolina.
