
Softball Outlasts Indiana 5-4 in Nine Innings

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Indiana 5-4 in nine innings Wednesday in Bloomington. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to weather conditions.
The Cardinals took an early lead when Kenzie Meisenburg led off the game with a single and took second on Sara Bausher's base hit. Keola Calderon's single scored Meisenburg to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers responded in the third when Katie Joy led off with a double and Stormy Hanson followed with a walk. Brooke Monroe's single down the left field line drove in Joy to tie the score at 1-1. A single by Heather Stillians scored Hanson to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead.
U of L tied the game in the fifth when Nicole Sparks belted a two-out single and moved to third on Shannon Nord's base hit. Sparks came home on a hit by Jodi Thomas to make the score 2-2.
Indiana opened up a two-run lead in the fifth when Monroe drew a two-out walk and scored on Stillians' triple to give IU a 3-2 advantage. Stillians then crossed the plate on a single by Dawn Ramynke to increase the lead to 4-2.
Louisville tied the game in the sixth when Meisenburg reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second when Bausher grounded out and scored Calderon's single. Calderon advanced to third on a Hoosier throwing error and scored on Melissa Jacobo's RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
The Cards finally broke the tie in the ninth as Calderon led off the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a Hoosier error. Nord beat the throw for an infield single to move Calderon to third. Thomas reached on a base hit and an Indiana error on the play allowed Calderon to score the winning run.
Offensively, U of L pounded out 14 hits. Calderon finished the game batting 3 for 5, scoring two runs and drove in two. Nord also went 3 for 5. Meisenburg and Bausher each had two hits. Jessica Rak (16-8) picked up the win in relief as she held the Hoosiers scoreless and hitless in 3.2 innings.
Katie Witham took the loss for IU, allowing three runs, only one earned on five hits and striking out two in four innings. Indiana falls to 9-15-1 on the season.
Louisville (18-17, 5-2 Conference USA) will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face C-USA rival Southern Miss April 6-7.
