Softball Splits Southern Miss Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Conference USA opponent Southern Miss 3-2 in the first game and lost the second game 5-4 Saturday at Southern Miss.
In the first game the Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Amanda Brown led off the game with a single and took second on a Louisville error and crossed the plate on Tammy Edwards' single.
Southern Miss added another run in the second inning on Sarah Boyd's solo home run.
U of L put up a three-spot in the sixth as Kenzie Meisenburg drew a walk, moved to third on a failed pick off attempt and an error and scored when Sara Bausher reached on a fielder's choice. Bausher then came home on Keola Calderon's double to tie the game at 2-2. Calderon took third after tagging up on Nicole Sparks' fly-out to center and scored on another error to give the Cards the 3-2 win.
Jessica Rak (17-8) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out three in seven innings. Calderon, Sparks, Shannon Nord, Lisa McMillan and Lisa Estes each had a hit for Louisville. This marks the first time in series history (eight games) that U of L has beaten Southern Miss.
Southern Miss starter Jessica Holaway took the loss, allowing three runs, two of them earned. Brown finished 2 for 3 with a run scored.
In the second game, the Cards jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first when Meisenburg led off with a walk and moved to third on Bausher's double. Meisenburg and Bausher came home on Calderon's single to center to make the score 2-0. A fielding error on the play allowed Calderon to move to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Sparks to increase the lead to 3-0.
Southern Miss responded in the home half of the inning when Brown led off with a walk, stole second, took third on Edwards' single and scored on a Louisville error. Edwards took third on the play.and crossed the plate on Laura Smith's hit to pull within one run and make the score 3-2.
The Cardinals added another run in the top of the second when Aja Sherman led off the inning with a single and took second on an error. She moved to second when Calderon reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Golden Eagle miscue to give Louisville a 4-2 lead.
Southern Miss got the run back in the bottom half of the second inning when Diane Hammes drew a walk, moved to second on Brown's two-out walk, stole third and scored on Peters' hit for a 4-3 game.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the fourth when Kristie Martin drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on a Louisville error. Brown followed, reaching on a fielder's choice. Kenya Peters hit into a fielder's choice, which sent Martin home for the tying run and put Brown on third. Edwards's sacrifice fly brought Brown home for the winning run.
Louisville reliever Krystle Herold (2-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and striking out two in five innings. Offensively, Bausher led the Cards, batting 2 for 4 with a run score.
Reliever Melissa Cundiff (6-8) got the win for the Golden Eagles, holding the Cardinals scoreless and giving up only two hits in four innings.
Louisville (19-18, 6-3) will play Southern Miss (21-21, 10-4) Sunday in the final game of the series.
