
Cardinal Baseball Extinguishes Golden Flashes 14-7

LOUISVILLE, KY- Louisville hammered out nine doubles and four home runs on its way to a 14-7 win over Kent in baseball action Friday at Cardinal Stadium.
Kent(1-3) took an early lead in what would prove to be a seesaw battle when center fielder Eric O'Brien scored from third on a double play ground ball, making it 1-0 Golden Flashes.
Louisville(7-1) answered in the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. First baseman Morgan Bojorquez extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double and scored when senior Mike Budak followed with a double of his own. Budak later scored on a wild pitch.
Kent followed with RBI singles by Phil LoCascio and Pat O'Brien with two out in the inning putting the Golden Flashes back in the lead 3-2.
After a leadoff double by Fernando Isa, junior Josh Bolen crushed his third home run of the season on an 0-2 pitch, to put the Cards back in front 4-3.
A four-run fourth chased Cardinal starter Mike Tisdale. Three straight singles loaded the bases, shortstop Matt Sega hit a sac fly to center, Eric O'Brien singled home a run, a wild pitched plated a run and Chris Welsch wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single to make it 7-4 Flashes.
Louisville responded with seven in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good at 11-7.
Ken Tirpack doubled to lead off the stanza and moved to third on a bunt single by J.T. LaFountain. Tirpack scored on a wild pitch and second baseman Scott Gerlach doubled home LaFountain.
Bolen then drew a two-out walk and Mark Jurich ripped his fourth home run of the season into the seats in right center, a three-run bomb. Bojorquez singled, and Budak followed with his first home run of the season, a long two run shot that cleared the fence in center.
Budak singled home a run in the sixth after a Jurich double, and Bolen blasted his fourth long ball of the season and second on the afternoon after Isa had singled for the final margin of victory.
Cardinal reliever Carlos Fernandez (2-0) picked up the win, giving up four hits in four innings in which he struck out four. He leads the team in wins, ERA(0.00) and K's(14).
Willie McKenzie wrapped up the final two outs of the fourth, giving up a hit and striking out one, while Josh Ring pitched the ninth, walking one.
The loss was taken by Kent reliever Kyle Augsberger(0-1) who was tagged for five runs on six hits and a walk in 2.2 innings. He struck out two. Starter Josh Mayle surrendered seven runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out one in 3.1 frames.
Bolen finished the day 3 for 4 with a double, a walk, two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI. He has hit safely in all eight games and has RBI in all but one.
Bolen is tied for the team lead with four home runs and is second with 14 RBI. Jurich, who was 2 for 5 with three RBI and two runs, now leads the team with a .469 average, 15 RBI and a 1.125 slugging percentage.
Budak was 4 for 5 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and scored twice. Gerlach, Bojorquez and Isa each had a pair of hits for the Cards.
Louisville will host Illinois Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium, and meet Kent State at 4:00 p.m. Admission to the games is free, and audio broadcasts are available at www.uoflsports.com.
