LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - The University of Louisville softball team opened up Conference USA play Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium with a 3-0 win over East Carolina and then dropped the second game of the doubleheader 1-0.
In Louisville's 3-0 win, the Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead on Sara Bausher's solo home run in the bottom of the first. Melissa Jacobo drew a walk and scored on Lisa Estes' double to give U of L a 2-0 lead.
U of L added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Bausher led off with a double, moved to third on Calderon's single and scored on an East Carolina error to give the Cards a 3-0 advantage.
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (10-5) got the win, tossing a one-hitter and striking out five in seven innings en route to her third complete game shutout of the season. The Cardinals were led offensively by Bausher, who went three for four with a home run and a double, scored two runs and had one RBI.
East Carolina starter Nicole Bacon (8-4) took the loss, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on eight hits and striking out seven batters in six innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Pirates broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth when Beth Bridger led off the inning with a single, moved to second on Brandi Benedict's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third when Lexy Hoegh grounded out. Kate Manuse's single scored Bridger to give East Carolina a 1-0 lead and the only run of the game.
East Carolina starter Laurie Davidson (5-3) allowed only two hits and struck out five in seven innings. The Pirates move to 15-8 (1-1 C-USA).
Louisville starter Krystle Herold (1-6) took the loss allowing one run on five hits and striking out three in seven innings. The Cardinals fall to 11-13 (1-1 C-USA).
"We had good pitching and good defense today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We have to make adjustments offensively - we were certainly in a position to score more runs, but couldn't make the adjustments to do that."
The teams will close out the series Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
