
Softball edges Missouri 3-2 in eight innings

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Keola Calderon went three for three and drove in all three of U of L's runs as the Cardinal softball team edged Missouri 3-2 in eight innings Sunday at the Missouri Softball Classic.
Keola Calderon got the Cardinals on the score board with a solo home run in the top of the first to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
Missouri responded in the home half of the first when Sara Vassmer reached on a Louisville error, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan LeCluyse and scored on a single by Daisy Metlach to tie the game at 1-1.
Louisville pulled ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Meisenburg singled, moved to second on Sara Bausher's sacrifice bunt and scored on Calderon's single.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Heather McAllister led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third when Vassmer grounded out and scored on a sacrifice fly by LeCluyse.
In the eighth inning, Keola Calderon's single scored Bausher, who was placed at second to give U of L a 3-2 lead. Missouri threatened to score in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded and one out, but U of L held defensively to preserve the win.
Calderon led the Cardinals, going three for three with a double and a home run and drove in all three of U of L's runs. Starting pitcher Krystle Herold (1-5) got the win allowing two runs, one earned on four hits and striking out two in eight innings.
Louisville (10-12) will open Conference USA play when they host East Carolina March 13-14 at Ulmer Stadium.
