Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team (3-10-2, 1-3-1) defeated the University of Memphis (8-4-1, 2-4-0) 3-1 on cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis. The win marks the first conference win of the season for the Cardinals.
After playing most of the season without two key offensive starters, the Cardinals were at full strength. In just his third game back, All-C-USA performer Simon Bird put the Cardinals on the board in the 21st minute of play. Bird scored off an assist from Dan Martin to Fernando Tolomelli. Then sophomore Matt Rose scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to put the Cardinals up 2-0 at the break.
Eleven minutes into the second half Nathan Stephens shot the ball from the left side of the box to score off an assist from Fernando Tolomelli. The game marked the return of Stephens after leaving the UAB game with an injury.
In the 62nd minute of play the Tigers' Daniel Roman scored off a short cross from John Reilly. Freshman keeper Brad Sokolowski registered seven saves on the evening to keep the Tigers at bay.
The Cardinals will continue the four game road stretch against South Florida on Friday, Oct. 25 at 5:00 p.m.
