Akron, Ohio - The University of Louisville men's soccer team defeated Akron 2-1 tonight at Lee Jackson field in Akron, Ohio. The Cardinals improve to 1-2 on the season.
Akron was up 1-0 at the 23-minute mark in the first half as Akron's Kyle Veris managed to weave through traffic in front of the net to head the ball past Louisville keeper Jeremy Morales. Veris was one of three Zips to finish with 3 shots as UA had a 13-10 advantage in looks at the net.
The Cardinals quickly tied things up at 1-all when George Zabaneh took a pass from Simon Bird and rolled it past Akron keeper Dan Pinho.
The game was a hard-fought one as the two teams racked up a total of 30 fouls and three yellow cards. With eight minutes left in the first half Akron's Troy Schmidt picked up a red card.
Louisville went ahead 2-1 newcomer Bird punched in his second goal of the season at the 71:30 mark. The Zips had a chance to tie with 14:50 remaining in the game as freshman Alex Odell lined up for a penalty kick. The ball sailed to the right of the goal.
The Cards will hit the road again as they travel to Bowling Green to take on Western Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 8:00 p.m.
