TORONTO - The University of Louisville men's soccer team defeated the Glenshield Sun Devils 3-1 Tuesday night in Toronto. The preseason game was the first of a week long tour of Canada, during which the Cardinals will play an exhibition match each day.
Courtenay Commander's early first half goal helped overcome preseason jitters. The junior put the Cardinals ahead1-0 when he scored on a solo run from the half way line. Simon Bird made the score 2-0, in the 28th minute, when he fired the Andy Tsartolias corner past the keeper at the the far post. The Cardinals went into the locker room at halftime with the 2-0 lead.
The second half saw the Sun Devils attack harder, but U of L's defense held strong behind goalkeeper David Gisler. Gisler, playing in his first game, recorded two first class saves. The Sun Devils, however, pulled within one in the 65th minute. Louisville put the game out of reach with five minutes left to play. Two freshmen, Justin Pierre of the Cayman Islands and Ballard graduate Kevin Singerman, combined to make the score 3-1 and secure the victory for the Cardinals.
Louisville travels to Ottawa next where they will take the field against one of the top Canadian professional teams, the Ottawa Wizards Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
