LOUISVILLE, KY. -- A two-run first inning was all senior pitcher Tara McClure needed as the University of Louisville softball notched a 3-1 Conference USA win over Saint Louis University. The victory pushed the Cardinals' record to 32-13 overall and 7-2 in C-USA. Saint Louis dropped 16-19 overall and 2-7 in league play as U of L took two of three in the weekend series at Ulmer Stadium
McClure scattered five hits registering her 14th win of 2001. A native of Batavia, Iowa, McClure struck out three and walked three in the victory.
The Cardinal lineup gave McClure everything she needed in the first inning, scoring twice.
With runners at first and third with no outs, sophomore Keola Calderon singled to left scoring CF Coleen Coughlin with the game's first run. After a Melissa Jacobo single loaded the bases, freshman 2B Nicole Sparks lifted a sacrafice fly to left giving the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
Saint Louis scored its only run of the day in the third inning when SS Janet Venorsky singled to right field, scoring 2B Jamie Hayden. Hayden opened the frame by drawing a walk.
U of L answered in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run off Billiken starter Nicole Bohnenstiehl. With two outs and the bases loaded, U of L catcher Lisa McMillian drove in just her fifth run of the season with a single to right, scoring Jacobo.
McClure closed out the contest retiring 13 of the final 15 Saint Louis hitters as she recorded her 14th complete game of the season.
U of L will take its show on the road next weekend visiting South Florida for a three-game C-USA series beginning April 14.
