LOUISVILLE, KY -- Six errors by the University of Louisville and 12 walks helped the South Florida Bulls to a Conference USA doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals, 7-0 and 9-5. The losses drop U of L to 7-4 in C-USA and 32-15 overall while the Bulls improve to 32-22 overall and 6-5 in league play.
In game one, USF hurler Jessi Kowal tossed a complete game shutout allowing just four hits in the 7-0 victory. Cardinal designated hitter Kenzie Meisenburg accounted for two of the Cards' hits, all singles.
U of L starter Tara McClure was victimized by shoddy defense in the third inning when USF pushed five unearned runs across home plate following a pair of two-out Cardinal errors.
The nightcap saw U of L take a 5-3 lead with a four-run fourth inning. This time it was U of L taking advantage of two Bull errors to score four unearned runs.
In the inning, CF Coleen Coughlin and RF Keola Calderon recorded RBIs after being hit by pitches with the bases loaded and Meisenburg added another on a bases loaded walk. DH Melissa Jacobo drove in the final run of the inning when she reached safely on a fielding error.
USF tied the contest in the bottom half of the fourth and took the 9-5 lead with a four-run sixth inning off starter and eventual loser Jessica Rak.
The two teams complete their three-game C-USA series tomorrow with a single contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
