The Memphis Tigers used four home runs and solid pitching to crush Louisville 12-1 in baseball action Saturday in Tennessee.
Memphis(17-12, 5-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Centerfielder Paul Reuer doubled to lead off, and scored on a single by DH Michael Lewis. First baseman Jay Fik walked, and Lewis scored on a single by third baseman Tyler Shelton. Fik was plated on a wild pitch.
The Tigers added four more runs on three hits and two hit batters in the third, the big blow coming on a two-run double by leftfielder Keno Anderson, to give UM a 7-0 lead.
Shelton hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth, to make it 8-0 before U of L(20-17, 5-6) tallied its only run in the top of the sixth when centerfielder Dave Williams Jr. doubled home second baseman Matt Jarboe, who had doubled to lead off the stanza, making it 8-1 Memphis. Jarboe's double was his second of the game and fourth on the season. It was Williams sixth two-bagger on the year.
In the seventh Fik and Shelton hit back-to-back homers to make it 10-1, and second baseman Dan Uggla hit a two-run shot, his league-leading 11th home run of the season in the eighth to give the Tigers the final 12-1 margin.
Shelton was 4 for 5 with four RBI. The Tigers have hit seven home runs in the first two games of the series.
Cardinal starter Denny Williams (3-7) couldn't get out of the third, tossing 2.1 innings and surrendering seven runs on five hits in the loss. He struck out one and walked two. Mike Eilers followed and threw 3.2 frames, giving up three runs on five hits, striking out three. Freshman Chris Keaton pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk to go with a strikeout.
Four Tiger pitchers combined to give up just one run on six hits and four walks. Nine Cards were victims to UM strikeouts. Starter Ryan O'Malley(4-1) was the winner, throwing the first six innings.
The teams will match up Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET when U of L will try to salvage the final game of the weekend set.
