Louisville defeated Southern Miss 6-3 in the rubber game of a three game series Sunday in baseball action at Cardinal Stadium.
Louisville(20-15, 5-4) converted back-to-back walks into a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Centerfielder Mike Hook and J.T. LaFountain earned free passes, and Hook scored when rightfielder Bill Gatti singled to center, and LaFountain was plated when catcher Fernando Isa hit an infield single.
The Cardinals added a single run in the second, when second baseman Matt Jarboe walked to open the inning, and scored on a single by LaFountain, making it 3-0 U of L.
Louisville's Josh Ring relieved starter Mike Eilers who left with the bases loaded in the fourth. Southern Miss(16-15, 3-6) put a run on the board when shortstop Brent Quinn drew a bases-loaded walk to score leftfielder Jeff Cook, making it 3-1 Cards.
Jarboe lead off the fourth with a triple, and scored on a double play to get the run back, 4-1, and pinch hitter Mark Jurich doubled down the leftfield line in the seventh to score Gatti, who had singled, to give U of L a 5-1 advantage.
The Golden Eagles tallied another run when catcher Darren Welch was singled in by DH Shea Douglas to make it 5-2 in the eighth.
But Louisville again got the run back with a solo home run by Hook with one out in the bottom of the eighth. The blast came on the first pitch of the at bat and was Hook's third of the season, to make it 6-2 Cards.
A solo home run off the bat of USM second baseman Ben Mosley closed out the scoring in the ninth.
Ring(4-2) tossed 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks to go with eight strikeouts in the win.
