
Cardinal Baseball Defeats UNC Asheville 7-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Josh Ring threw a complete-game four-hitter to lead the University of Louisville to a 7-2 win over UNC Asheville Thursday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
Senior Bill Gatti Jr. gave the Cardinals an early lead when he doubled to right center field to score senior Mike Hook in the first inning.
The Cards added two more in the second on a bases-loaded single by Hook, scoring junior Fernando Isa and senior Matt Jarboe.
In the sixth, freshman Carlos De la Osa smashed a double down the right field line to plate two more Cards, increasing the lead to 5-0.
UNCA got on the scoreboard in the seventh when senior Corey Mercer homered to right, his second of the season.
The Cards added insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings as they evened their record at 9-9 on the season.
Ring (1-1), who entered the game with a team-high four saves as the Cards' closer, struck out two and walked just one in his first start of the season. The Niceville, Fla., native allowed just one runner to reach second base through the first six innings.
Hook finished with two hits, two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the Cards. Gatti came up with two hits and two RBI, and Isa added two hits and an RBI. All nine Cardinal starters reached base.
Freshman Nick Jaska led UNCA (1-8) with a pair of hits, while freshman Matt Neils had a double and an RBI.
Junior Mark Schuurman (1-1), the first of five Bulldog pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings.
The Cardinals return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they begin a three-game series with Southern Illinois at Cardinal Stadium.
