February 25, 2001 | Softball
In the first game, the Cardinals committed a pair of errors and struck out nine times. Louisville starter Jessica Rak gave up five runs, only two of which were earned and struck out four before being replaced in the sixth inning. Mandy Rockwell took over and held BSU hitless and struck out two.
"You can't strike out nine times in seven innings and expect to get things going offensively," said head coach Sandy Pearsall.
BSU pitcher Marcy Mobley threw a complete game for the win, which was Ball State's season opener.
Rockwell started the second game and pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and strucking out three. The Cardinals had a 2-0 leadafter five and exploded for five runs in the sixth.
"Our bats came alive in the second game allowing us scoring opportunities. It was quite a contrast from the first game," said Pearsall. "Mandy shut them down offensively with a nice outing for us."
Rockwell's teammates awoke from their first game doldrums, spraying 11 hits, five for extra bases. Candi Padilla, Nikki Gaudio each had a double with Melissa Jacobo smacking two. Coleen Coughlin added a triple.
Louisville's record moves to 9-5 and Ball State is even at 1-1 on the season.
