Sophomore Mike Eilers (1-1) pitched 7.1 innings allowing four hits while striking out five and walking two as the Cardinals(1-4) took the first game of the three-game non-conference series at Hawai'i, 5-0.
Eilers combined with Josh Ring, who recorded his first save, for U of L's first shutout of an opponent since March 1,1998 when they crushed Toledo 17-0 in Louisville. Hawaii's Jeff Coleman (0-1) suffered the loss, tossing 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, scattering five hits and striking out five with one walk.
The Cards limited Hawai'i(3-4) to four singles and a double over nine. Third baseman Patrick Scalabrini had three of the hits for Hawai'i, while the Cards tallied nine safeties. Defensively, Louisville turned three double plays.
Seniors Mike Hook and Matt Jarboe each had two hits as did Mike Budak, who drove in two runs. Hook added his fourth stolen base. Sophomore Dave Williams Jr. tripled home a run and scored twice. Shortstop Adam Haley was 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI double, a sacrifice and was hit by a pitch. He currently leads the team in hitting(.429), runs(7), on-base average(.529) and defensive assists(18), and has not commited an error.
Louisville's Garrett Estabrook will face Sean Yamashita Saturday at 6:05 ET in game two of the three game set. The game will be broadcast on the internet at http://uhathletics.hawaii.edu. Sunday's game at 7:05 ET will wrap up the series.
