Louisville, Ky. - In front of a capacity crowd at Cardinal Park, Louisville fell 2-1 to Kentucky.
Freshman Mason Barber got the Cards on the board early, scoring in the eighth minute of play. Barber caught Kentucky goalkeeper Brian O'Leary down right outside the box and dribbled in for the unassisted goal.
Kentucky's Brook Pearse tied the score in the 42nd minute. Pearse scored off a free kick from Ilkka Jantti, hitting the left corner.
In the second period, Kentucky's JD Stephenson dribbled the ball in to score in the 72nd minute of play and put the Cats up 2-1.
Louisville's Shawn Faria came close to scoring in the 82nd minute but his shot was just wide. The Cards never got closer.
"I am a little disappointed," said Louisville head coach Tony Colavecchia. " I think they had a slight advantage by playing three exhibitions games. They played very effectively. It was hard to start the season with a team of this caliber, without playing any previous games.
"But now we can workout some strengths and weakness. We have something to go back and work on now."
