COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Staggered by a pair of injuries to starters, Louisville was swept 15-6, 15-2, 15-8 by tournament host Maryland.
Louisville tried to catch Maryland flatfooted in the first game when they pulled to a 5-1 lead, but instead could only watch in surprise as the Terps roared back allowing the Cardinals just one more point while scoring 14 of their own. Louisville hit .000 in that game to Maryland's .324.
Starters Lesley Drury and Stacey Mercer collided early in the second game, leaving Drury with a concussion and Mercer with an injured leg.
Louisville had to stitch together a makeshift lineup which was picked apart by Maryland's strong hitting. The Terps hit .600 to U of L's .000 with the Cards managing only seven kills in 24 attacks.
"There is no doubt that our team was shaken by the injuries, but I was glad to see them stay focused and make a little run," said head coach Leonid Yelin.
Louisville built a 5-2 lead in the third set and then had to call timeout when Maryland staged a comeback to go up 8-5. Louisville had a block by Sherry Hurley and a tip by Sonja Percan to bring them to within one at 8-7 but could score only one more point. Louisville was outhit .044 to .418 for the game and beaten 15-5 in blocks.
Setter Emily Roberson had five kills and 16 assists for the Cardinals.
