LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Southern Miss was without its best player, and Louisville welcomed back its leading hitter yesterday as the Cardinals swept the match in three.
The Cards welcomed back leading hitter Sonja Percan who has missed six matches with a foot injury. She came off the bench to notch nine kills on 14 attacks.
However, it was Kelly McClain's 13 kills and 12 digs that led the Cards to a 15-5, 15-10, 15-4 victory over Southern Miss. The Cardinals moved their record to 7-9 and improved their league mark to 5-2. Southern Miss drops to 11-10 with a 2-5 conference tally.
"We are finally approaching full strength at just the right time as we move into the meat of our conference schedule," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
U of L cruised to an easy victory in the first game, hitting .242 to USM's .077. In the second game, Southern Miss popped out to a 6-2 lead, but were outscored 13-4 down the stretch and then never threatened in the third. The Eagles lost their best player, Tosha Barnicoat, to a knee injury last week.
"We got a little revenge today. They upset us last year down there when we were ranked No. 16," said Yelin.
