MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Kelly McClain had 20 kills and a career-high four aces to lead the Cardinals to a three-game sweep of Memphis in Conference USA volleyball.
Louisville won 15-6, 15-7 and 18-16 to improve its record to 8-9 and moved to 6-2 in Conference USA action. The Tigers drop to 8-14 and 1-7 in the C-USA.
The Cardinals used a fast start to build a 10-2 lead in the first game with the Tigers able to score just four more points before falling 15-6. Poor hitting plagued the Tigers, who hit just .081 to Louisville's .282.
Not learning from their first game, Memphis let the Cardinals out to a 9-2 in the second game. The Tigers were able to cut the lead to four at 9-5 with a short-lived run helped by erratic hitting on the part of the Cardinals but fell 15-7.
Memphis stayed close in the third set and took their first lead at 10-9 when Kelly McClain was blocked by Lindsay Bax. A quick Cardinal time-out did not help as Memphis inched to game point at 14-11 when Amy Vaughn aced the Cards. Powered by the aggressive serving of Sonja Percan, Louisville tied at 14. Memphis blocked for their 15th point, Louisville scored again and an ace by McClain took the Cards to match point but the Tigers tied at 16. McClain scored the 17th point and Lesley Drury slammed home the match winning point.
"The third game proves that every team in this league is more than capable of good, good volleyball. Games like that excite the crowd and create rivalries," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "It was the first match that we have been at full strength and it was nice to have a little depth to call upon from the bench."
