ST. LOUIS - Billikens senior captain Jeff DiMaria celebrated Senior Night with a pair of goals to lift 10th-ranked Saint Louis University past Louisville 4-1 tonight and grab a share of the Conference USA men's regular-season championship before 3,478 at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Senior forward Jason Mims scored in his sixth consecutive match as Saint Louis shares the regular-season conference crown with UAB as both finished 7-1-0 in league play.
The Billikens have struggled recently defending free kicks, and that's exactly how Louisville scored the game's first goal at 15:22. From the left wing, midfielder Stuart Langrish sent a cross into the Bills' penalty area that was knocked down but not controlled by the SLU defense. Midfielder Goran Yabar collected the loose ball, deftly stepped to his right and drilled a five-yard shot into the upper right corner.
The Billikens responded on a goal by Mims at 34:54. After left back Jason Cole tracked down a long lead pass down the right side, he centered a pass that DiMaria let go through to Mims running on the far post. Mims drilled a five-yard shot past Cards keeper Jeremy Morales.
Saint Louis picked up the pace in the second half, and DiMaria put the Bills ahead to stay at 47:24. Off a Mims corner kick, defender Tim Tedoni flicked the ball to the far post where DiMaria tapped it in.
Freshman Jack Jewsbury gave SLU breathing room at 58:42 as he slipped a 15-yard shot from the left side and a difficult angle to the far post. Fellow forward Jason Vijil picked up the assist. DiMaria put the finishing touch on the match at 82:59.
The Billikens out-shot the Cardinals 14-7 as goalkeeper Paul Nagy made four saves, while Jeremy Morales made five stops for the Cardinals.
Saint Louis is 14-2-1 overall and finished 7-1-0 in C-USA, while the Cardinals are 7-7-2 overall and 3-4-0.
