CHICAGO - The University of Louisville men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Conference USA foe DePaul Sunday afternoon in Chicago, Ill.
Just 10 minutes after the kick-off, the Cardinals found themselves with a pair of opportunities in front of the Blue Demon goal, but failed to capitalize.
The host team netted their first goal in the 35th minute when forward Shane Hudson turned in the midfield with the ball and dribbled past a pair of Cardinal defenders. Hudson finished his opportunity after taking the ball around sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Morales and passing the ball into the open net.
The Cardinals came out in the second half and pushed for the equalizing goal by moving more players into the attack. The tactics paid off in the fact that chances were created, but left Louisville short-handed in dealing with the DePaul counter-attacks.
Morales came up with some very difficult saves in breakaway situations to keep the Cards in the game despite the high-winds and steady rain.
The Blue Demons sealed the Cards fate in the 84th minute when midfielder Joe Ahearn rifled a low shot that skipped off the wet surface and under the arms of Morales.
"Speaking from my gut and heart, I can't deny that DePaul outplayed us," said UofL coach Tony Colavecchia. "They were more motivated and played with much more passion and desire than us."
Louisville will be back in action in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Cards will return to Conference USA action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. (ET) against South Florida at Cardinal Field.
