CINCINNATI - The Cardinals got a goal from Shawn Faria in the 87th minute Wednesday night to defeat Xavier University in front of 372 on the XU campus.
Faria, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, netted the game-winner after junior midfielder Goran Yabar dribbled in behind the Xavier defense and passed the ball to Faria about nine yards in front of the goal. Faria made no mistake in driving a low shot to the corner of the net past the outreached arms of Xavier goalkeeper Paul Wesseling.
The Cards held on for the final three minutes to preserve the 1-0 victory and remain unbeaten on the young season that has seen Faria score a goal in every game.
Louisville will begin Conference USA play this weekend when they travel to DePaul on Sunday. The game will be the home-opener for the Blue Demons, who are coming off road losses to Detroit (3-4 on 9/4/99) and Bowling Green (0-2 on 9/5/99). Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
