HOUSTON - The No. 9 ranked University of Houston baseball team completed its three-game sweep over visiting Louisville 5-2 Sunday in Conference USA baseball action.
Houston got things started in the bottom of the fifth inning when shortstop Aaron Melebeck singled in Jarrod Bitter to give UH a 1-0 lead. Tyson Schweitzer then drove in Melebeck and Brandon Caraway with a single to make the score 3-0.
Louisville then had a chance to get out of the inning when the next batter hit a routine grounder that could have been converted into a double-play, but the Cardinals failed to touch second base on the pivot and the inning was still alive. A single on the next play by Kris Wilken gave the Cougars a wider 4-0 lead.
UH starting pitcher Duncan McAdoo worked out of a few jams on the day and lasted into the seventh inning for his seventh win of the season. Louisville scored one run in both the seventh and eighth innings but the Cougar bullpen of Robert Dieudonn? and Greg Runser closed the door on a 5-2 final.
Houston's 36-14 record is the best UH won-loss total through 50 games since 1989. Louisville fell to 15-34-1 on the season and 8-15-1 in league play.
Louisville will conclude the 2000 regular season with a three-game series against UNC Charlotte at Cardinal Stadium beginning on Friday, May 12. First pitch of the series opener will be at 6:00 p.m.
