ST. LOUIS - The University of Louisville and Saint Louis split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Conference USA baseball action, with each team winning a 10-6 decision.
Louisville pounded out 16 hits as they opened the doubleheader Saturday with a victory over the Billikens. Like Friday night's game, the Cards got on the board first when catcher Curtis Sapp singled in centerfielder Mike Hook, who was hit by a pitch and stole second to open the first inning.
The Billikens answered in the second after a walk and three singles plated two runs to take a 2-1 lead. But the Cards regained the lead when Sapp doubled in rightfielder Paul Brown, who had singled to lead off the inning, and DH Troy Hilpp singled in Sapp.
In the fifth, another leadoff hit turned into a Cardinal run when shortstop Scott Kohler scored on Hilpp's sac fly to make the score 4-2. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Louis shortstop Paul Miles walked to open the inning and then scored when leftfielder Kurt Evans singled to center, closing the gap to 4-3.
Second baseman Matt Jarboe doubled to open the sixth and scored on a single by Brown, and then Sapp jacked a 1-2 pitch down the leftfield line for his team-leading fifth home run of the year, a two run clout, extending the Cardinal lead to 7-3.
The leadoff hitter reached in each of the five Cardinal scoring innings. Brown and Sapp each reached base on walks to lead off the eighth and third baseman Kyle Rajsich tripled to clear the bases. He later scored on a double by leftfielder David Williams to close the scoring for U of L.
Todd Raithel (3-6) tossed eight innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks to go with seven strikeouts, which ties him for fourth on the career list at U of L with 218. His appearance in the game places him on top of the U of L career list with 74. Sapp and Kohler each had three hits.
SLU's Ryan Warneke (2-5) surrendered six runs on 11 hits and a walk.
In game two, the Billikens jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four in the first on five hits. Third baseman Joe Boyer drove in two with a single up the middle.
The Cards plated a single run in the top of the third before SLU plated four more in the bottom of the inning. The big blow was a bases-loaded double by catcher Jordan Gajewski that scored three to make the score 8-1.
Saint Louis scored two more in the fourth on four hits to up the lead to 10-1. The Cards answered with a run in the fifth on a double by Kohler that scored Brown. Kohler extended his hitting streak to seven games and Brown has now hit safely in nine consecutive games.
Louisville chipped away at the lead with one in the sixth off a double by third baseman Kevin Martinez, two more in the seventh and another in the eighth to cut the lead to 10-6, but could get no closer.
Starter Mike Gardner (0-3) took the loss after getting touched for four runs on five hits in just a third of an inning. Antonio Castellvi tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless ball to keep the Cards close.
Wes Jaillet (3-4) was the winner for the Billikens, going six innings, giving up five runs on six hits, six walks and seven strikeouts.
Scott Kohler added three more hits in the game and was 6-for-11 with three runs and an RBI in the two games.
Louisville will face Kentucky at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cardinal Stadium.
