LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville doubled up Xavier 8-4 in baseball action Wednesday evening at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cards (12-26-1) took advantage of two Xavier errors in the second to plate four runs on a two-run double by David Williams Jr., followed by a two-run single by Mike Hook putting U of L up 4-0.
Designated hitter Rob Partin led off the fourth with a double to the right centerfield gap, followed by a triple by Williams. Second baseman Matt Jarboe's ground out plated Williams to put the Cards up 7-0.
Xavier (14-25) touched Cardinal starter Mike Eilers, who shut the Musketeers out through four, for four runs in the fifth. Carlos Fernandez (1-0) relieved Eilers and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, surrendering five hits and striking out two to pick up his first collegiate win.
Paul Brown followed a run-saving catch against the right field wall in the top of the sixth, with a solo shot to right in the bottom of the seventh, his fourth home run of the season to put the Cards up 8-4. Partin, Scott Kohler and Curtis Sapp each had three hits for the Cards.
Todd Raithel struck out three in his two scoreless innings, and Sean Green finished up with a perfect ninth.
XU starter James Siefker (5-7) gave up seven runs, only two of which were earned on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work and picked up the loss.
