Southern Miss Tops Baseball Cards 8-4

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss topped Louisville 8-4 in baseball action Saturday to take a 2-0 series lead.
Louisville (10-21-1, 4-6-1) struck for two runs in the second to take the lead on a ground out by Troy Hilpp and a fielding error.
The Eagles (23-11, 9-1) answered by plating four with two outs off starter Todd Raithel (2-5), who took the loss. Back-to-back walks were followed by an RBI single by first baseman Chris Finnegan, and a two-run triple by designated hitter DeQuincy Scott who then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-2.
The Cards closed to 4-3 in the fourth when second baseman Matt Jarboe singled in rightfielder Paul Brown, who had walked to lead off the inning. USM added one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth before Louisville pushed home a run in the ninth.
Eagles starter Shea Douglas (3-1) pitched seven innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits, five walks and nine strikeouts to get the win. Raithel was touched for four runs on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
Finnegan was 3-for-5 in the game, scoring twice. Jarboe, and senior Rob Partin each collected two hits for the Cards.
The teams will meet Sunday at 3:30 EDT to wrap up the series.
