TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Louisville head baseball coach Lelo Prado has been named an assistant coach for the 2000 USA Baseball National Team as announced by USA Baseball on Tuesday. Mike Gillespie, Head Coach at the University of Southern California, was named head coach of the National team. The appointment does not effect his status as Head Coach of the Cardinals
The team will consist of collegiate all-stars and will compete on the US WEST Red, White and Blue Summer Tour. The team is different than the 2000 Olympic team that will compete in Sydney.
"It is an honor to be selected to the staff of the National Team," said Prado, who will enter his fifth season at the helm of the Cardinals. "As a past member of the selection committee, it will be exciting now to also be directly involved with coaching these individuals."
Prado was a member of the USA Baseball Selection Committee from 1995-1998, including the group that selected the bronze medal winning Olympic team in 1996. He coached the University of Tampa to consecutive Division II National titles in '92 and '93. USC's John Savage will be the pitching coach while Loyola Marymount Head Coach Frank Cruz and Clemson skipper Tim Corbin will join Prado on Gillespie's staff.
The Cardinal baseball team will open its season February 12 when it hosts Evansville at Cardinal Stadium for a 1:00 P.M. game. The team features 21 letterwinners off last year's team that finished 37-19, and was ranked in the top 25 for the first time in school history.
