LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Cincinnati Bearcats won game one of the three game weekend series with Louisville 6-3 Friday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
The Bearcats (16-5, 3-1) turned a 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth into a 5-3 lead on solo homers by third-baseman Kevin Youkilis, his second of the game and sixth on the year, and first baseman Craig Tewes.
Starter Mike Miranda (4-1) went the distance for UC surrendering only one earned run on six hits, while striking out eight. Miranda walked six, hit two Cardinal batters and had two balks.
The Bearcats got on the board in the first when leadoff man Anthony Snowell was hit by an 0-2 pitch from Bentley, and Youkilis launched a wind-aided fly ball to right that just cleared the fence.
Brian Bentley (1-1) took the loss, despite striking out a career high 13 in his 7.2 innings of work, giving up 5 runs, all of which were earned on 8 hits and 2 walks.
The Cards (7-16-1, 1-2-1), down 3-0, got back into the game in the bottom of the fourth on second baseman Kyle Rajsich's first career home run, a first pitch shot to right that scored right fielder Paul Brown who had reached on an error. Louisville then tied the score at three when third baseman Scott Kohler, who had doubled, scored from third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.
The series continues Saturday at 1:00, and wraps up Sunday at 1:00 at Cardinal Stadium.
