LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville and Miami (OH) split a Sunday doubleheader in baseball at Cardinal Stadium, with U of L (5-13)winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second to the RedHawks (4-5) 13-0.
A two-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh by catcher Curtis Sapp capped a three run rally to give the Cards a 4-3 win over Miami in the first game of the doubleheader.
Antonio Castellvi pitched the final out of the top of the seventh for the Cards to even his record at 1-1. Jay Harper (0-1) took the loss for the RedHawks.
Second baseman John Lackaff hit his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to right, to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Louisville answered in the bottom of the frame when Bill Gatti Jr. doubled home Troy Hilpp.
Miami put up runs in the sixth and seventh off starter Mike Gardner, who pitched six and two-thirds of an inning, striking out five, walking four and giving up four hits. Two of his three runs were earned.
The seventh began for the Cards with a single by Hilpp and Gatti getting hit by reliever Tim Wagner. Kyle Rajsich attempted to bunt the runners over, but Hilpp was out on a close play at third. Jay Harper replaced Wagner for Miami, when Josh Rhodes hit a pinch hit single to drive in Gatti. Mike Hook was hit by a pitch and Sean Sterner walked in a run to tie the score at three. Scott Kohler struck out on a squeeze attempt, which lead to Sapp's single. Sapp was three-for-four in the first game. Hilpp and Gatti each had two hits.
In the second game, the RedHawks exploded for nine runs in the third inning on eight hits and two Cardinal errors to jump out to a 9-0 lead. Eight of the nine starters for the RedHawks collected a hit, run and RBI, lead by first baseman Joe Spain who was three-for-four with four RBI and two runs. Shortstop Jeremy Ison also collected three hits, driving in two.
Miami starter Adam Keel (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, going the distance. Cardinal starter Sean Green (0-4) pitched one-two-three first and second innings, but ran into trouble in the third getting his only out on a sacrifice bunt. He gave up six runs on four hits and a walk, five of the runs were earned.
Senior righty Brad Mattingly pitched one and a third, but fared no better surrendering six runs on seven hits.
The lone bright spots for the Cards were a three-for-four performance by senior Paul Brown, and two and one-thirds innings pitched by junior Damon Sementilli, his first appearance of the season, in which all seven of his outs were via the strikeout. Sementilli sat down six consecutive batters at one point.
Clark Mace singled in the seventh in game one and tripled in the fourth in game two for Miami to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
U of L will host Austin Peay on Tuesday at Cardinal Stadium at 3:00 before hitting the road for three at Tulane next weekend.
