As a first baseman and catcher for the Cardinals, Jim LaFountain smacked 30 home runs with 121 runs batted in his two seasons at Louisville. He was a two-time All-Metro Conference selection and became the program's first All-American as a senior in 1976 in addition to earning Academic All-America honors. He set an NCAA record with 14 RBIs in a 1976 game against Western Kentucky when he hit three grand slams (two in one inning) and a solo homer. After a three-year professional career with the Minnesota Twins organization, LaFountain served as a teacher at the high school and collegiate levels. A certified strength coach and personal trainer, he is currently a U.S. Olympic Test Specialist in Lake Placid, N.Y. and is the owner and operator of All-American Fitness Center in New Hartford, N.Y. His son, J.T., was also an All-Conference baseball player at Louisville, playing for the Cardinals from 2001-05.
