James Ferriell, Jr. was the best golfer to play for UofL according to Coach John Dromo and at the time the only one to play on the pro tour. Ferriell was a quarter-finalist in the 1962 NCAA tournament at Duke University. Ferriell was given enough money for one day of competition and had to be wired additional funds each day that he won. He was third low qualifier for the 1963 tournament. He played on the pro tour for seven years, winning the 1973 Emerald Hills Open in West Palm Beach, Fla. Ferriell was a three time champion of the Kentucky Open. His best year professionally was 1973 when he won $42,000. He won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in 1963. During his four year career at UofL, the Cardinals never won less than 20 matches per year.
