Guy Shearer enrolled at UofL in 1928 and immediately went out for the freshman football team even though his high school in Lancaster, Kentucky, didn’t even have a football squad. He went on to letter four times in football and was the co-captain of the 1931 squad. A superb athlete, Shearer participated in intercollegiate wrestling, boxing and basketball along with football while at UofL. Noted best for his football ability, he had the distinction of playing every position on the team during his four years with the exception of center. As a junior he was selected All-American Honorable Mention at the guard position picked by the Official All-American Board which consisted of such people as Knute Rockne, Tad Jones and Glen “Pop” Warner. Physicians recommended that he drop football in his senior season because of a back injury. He played, however, but as a left tackle and was voted All-State by the SIAA. Shearer went on to become a lawyer, judge, lecturer, author and was an assistant attorney general in Kentucky for over eight years.
