Junior: Melissa was named a BIG EAST Academic All-Star for the 2010-11 season. As a distance swimmer, she had a strong showing against Cincinnati, placing third in the 1650-free with a time of 17:31.89.
Sophomore: Melissa competed in the BIG EAST championships as a sophomore. In the Purdue Invitational, she set two new personal bests in the 500-free with a time of 4:59.91. Against Indiana, Melissa came in fourth in the 1000-free as she set a personal best in the event with a time of 10:15.87. She also set a new personal best against Kentucky in the 1650-free with a time 16:54.33 as she came in second.
Freshman: Melissa added depth in the distance events for the Cardinals. She qualified for the BIG EAST in the 500-free and the 1650-free.
Prep: Adding to the Cardinal's Florida contingent, Melissa comes to Louisville from Jacksonville where she swam for the Bolles School Sharks and was coached by Jon Sakovich. In 2007, she placed second in the 500-free at the Florida High School Regional meet and then went on to place 8th at the Florida State Championships. Melissa arrived in Louisville as a four-time All- Gateway Conference swimmer, 2008 All- State honors recipient and two-time "Most Outstanding" award recipient. She was also a member of NHS and an AP Scholar with Honor.
Personal: Melissa is the daughter of Walter and Kathy Steele. Birthday is October 8, 1989. Major is early elementary education.
